The Safe Start demonstration projects, funded by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention OJJDP under the first phase of the Safe Start initiative, are primarily designed to influence change at the systems or macrolevels to reduce the incidence of and impact of exposure to violence for children aged birth to 6 years; direct services are also provided to young children and their families who were exposed to violence.

The data presented in this article come from 10 communities that submitted data regarding the characteristics of young children exposed to violence to OJJDP. These data represent families who are typically not represented in the databases of state child protective services programs but instead have been identified by domestic violence advocates, early care and education providers, family members, court personnel, police, and other social service personnel as families with young children in need of intervention due to violence exposure.

The purpose of this article is to describe the characteristics of young children and their parents who seek help for psychosocial problems related to exposure to family and community violence. Results indicate that one quarter of the children and nearly half of their parents evidenced clinical levels of stress, suggesting the need to intervene at the family level as well as at the individual level when working with young children exposed to violence. The information presented, including the extent of exposure to violence, the multiple types of violence to which children are exposed, the impact of this exposure on young children and their families, and the multiple ways in which families exposed to violence come to the attention of service providers is useful for policy makers and service providers who are interested in breaking the cycle of violence by meeting the needs of the children exposed to violence and their families.

The Safe Affordable Fission Engine SAFE test series addresses Phase 1 Space Fission Systems issues in particular non-nuclear testing and system integration issues leading to the testing and non-nuclear demonstration of a kW fully integrated flight unit.

The first part of the SAFE 30 test series demonstrated operation of the simulated nuclear core and heat pipe system. The objective of the second part is to demonstrate an integrated propulsion system consisting of a core, conversion system and a thruster where the system converts thermal heat into jet power. This end-to-end system demonstration sets a precedent for ground testing of nuclear electric propulsion systems.

The paper describes the SAFE 30 end-to-end system demonstration and its subsystems. Safe start up of a green field ethylene plant. In , Westlake Petrochemicals Corporation elected to construct and operate a facility for producing 1 billion pounds per year of ethylene. The project was to be accomplished where there was no established corporate environment for ethylene production and the facility was to be located at a green field site.

The establishment and empowerment of the personnel organization would therefore, also be green field in nature. With the meager beginnings of but one employee, the project team was assembled; chartered to accomplish their assignment safely and proficiently.

The facility accomplished design level operations within four months of start -up and successfully completed its performance test run the following month. A real credit to the personnel. How has this been accomplished? A collective and individual, intense focus on safety. The paper describes how this was accomplished.

Electricity and magnetism are often difficult to understand because they are invisible. We will demonstrate various ways to visualize electric fields. We will play music on a plasma discharge from a Tesla coil, create static charge on balloons with hair, and store charge using a Leyden jar.

We will also show safe ways to observe a solar eclipse, which is critical for the upcoming August 21, eclipse. The rotor is supported by two 8-pole redundant radial bearings, and coil failing situations are simulated by manually shutting down their control current commands from the controller cockpit.

The effectiveness of the controller was demonstrated when only two active coils from each radial bearing could be used that is, 14 coils failed. These remaining two coils still levitated the rotor and spun it without losing stability or desired position up to the maximum allowable speed of 20, rpm.

Safe Driving and Road Signs. Fordson Bilingual Demonstration Project. This vocational instructional module on safe driving and road signs is one of eight such modules designed to assist recently arrived Arab students, limited in English proficiency LEP , in critical instructional areas in a comprehensive high school. Goal stated for this module is for the student preparing for driver's education to recognize,…. Demonstration of plasma start -up by Coaxial Helicity Injection.

Experimental results on the first successful transfer of a Coaxial-Helicity-Injection- CHI -produced discharge to inductive operation are reported. CHI assisted plasma start -up is more robust than inductive-only operation and reduces volt-seconds consumption. After hand-off for inductive operation, the initial kA of CHI-produced current drops to 44 kA, then ramps up to kA, using only 30 mVs, more than 30induction alone.

CHI discharges can also be generated while the central transformer is in the process of being pre-charged, during which period it induces a negative loop voltage on the CHI discharge. Such capability is believed to be important for a short pulse burning plasma experiment that could contain a solenoid. In the latest results, which improve upon the earlier work Raman et.

This is particularly important for a reactor in which the poloidal field coils would be located outside blanket structures. Three important results are reported. First, CHI is shown to produce closed flux plasma. Second, it is shown that electrode-based CHI plasmas can be sufficiently clean for fusion research purposes. Finally, it is shown that CHI discharges, in addition to generating useful startup current, improve the performance of inductive discharges.

Second Edition. Chemical demonstrations can and do enhance an otherwise potentially dull subjects--the properties of hazardous materials. This book contains the recipes for presenting several chemical demonstrations. Demonstrations are designed to be relatively easy to perform and present minimal hazards if done properly. The book contains an introduction, safety…. The current concept of commercial concentrated solar power CSP plants, based on the concept of a solar field, receiver, storage and power block, experienced significant growth in the past decades.

The power block is the most well know part of the plant, while solar field depends on the receiver technology. The dominant receiver technologies are parabolic troughs and central towers. Most thermal energy storage TES relies on two tanks of molten salts, one hot and one cold serviced by pumps and piping systems.

In spite of the technical development level achieved by these systems, efficiency is limited, mainly caused by thermal losses in piping, parasitic losses due to electric tracing and pumping and receiver limitations. The present paper, explains the demonstration prototype based on the CSPonD concept, with emphasis on the planned start -up process for the facility. Introduction Select units in the military have improved combat medic training by integrating their functions into routine clinical care activities with measurable improvements in battlefield care.

This level of integration is currently limited to special operations units. It is unknown if regular Army units and combat medics can emulate these successes. The goal of this project was to determine whether US Army combat medics can be integrated into routine emergency department ED clinical care, specifically medication administration.

Project Design This was a quality assurance project that monitored training of combat medics to administer parenteral medications and to ensure patient safety. Combat medics were provided training that included direct supervision during medication administration. Once proficiency was demonstrated , combat medics would prepare the medications under direct supervision, followed by indirect supervision during administration.

As part of the quality assurance and safety processes, combat medics were required to document all medication administrations, supervising provider, and unexpected adverse events. Additional quality assurance follow-up occurred via complete chart review by the project lead.

No adverse events or patient safety events were reported by the combat medics or discovered during the quality assurance process. In this limited case series, combat medics safely administered parenteral medications under indirect provider supervision. Future research is needed to further develop this training model for both the military and civilian setting.

A pilot project demonstrating that combat medics can safely administer parenteral medications in the emergency department. Prehosp Disaster Med. It is then weighed to about 25 mg and mixed with 1 ml acetone before sonicated for 5 minutes to dissolve the ABS. It is also drop-casted on the end of a fiber ferrule to be integrated in the laser cavity. The proposed work revealed that the laser oscillated at about nm with threshold input pump power of The increase in pump power resulted in the increase in repetition rate where the pulse train increases from 8.

The generated pulsed laser yields a maximum of 1. The signal-to-noise ratio of 40 dB indicates that the generated pulse is stable. Evaluation of safe performance secondary school driver education curriculum demonstration project. The primary objective of this Project was to determine the crash reduction potential of a quality, competency-based driver training program known as the Safe Performance Curriculum SPC. The experimental design called for the random assignment of Snell, Martha E.

The purpose of this demonstration was to evaluate a universal intervention during teacher-identified routines that were characterized by significant classwide problem behavior.

Six Head Start classrooms seven groups of children, with one classroom divided into two groups received two workshops and two coaching sessions on universal Positive…. Following the implementation of Tier 1 and Tier 2 Positive Behavior Support PBS strategies in six Head Start HS classrooms, three children in two classrooms were identified who had significant behavioral challenges and met the criteria for the use of individualized PBS. The purpose of this demonstration was to evaluate whether the effects of….

Citrus fruit oranges, tangerines, grapefruit or lemons purchased in a grocery store can be experimentally infected with readily-available sources of "Penicillium digitatum" to demonstrate the four basic steps of Koch's postulates, also known as proof of pathogenicity. The mould is isolated from naturally-infected citrus fruit into pure culture…. Experimental demonstration of a single-spike hard-X-ray free-electron laser starting from noise.

In this letter, we report the experimental demonstration of single-spike hard-X-ray free-electron laser pulses starting from noise with multi-eV bandwidth. Here, this is accomplished by shaping a low-charge electron beam with a slotted emittance spoiler and by adjusting the transport optics to optimize the beam-shaping accuracy. Based on elementary free-electron laser scaling laws, we estimate the pulse duration to be less than 1 fs full-width at half-maximum.

Sampling and analysis of aircraft engine cold start particles and demonstration of an electrostatic personal particle sampler. Aircraft engines emit an aerosol plume during startup in extremely cold weather that can drift into areas occupied by flightline ground crews. This study tested a personal sampler used to assess exposure to particles in the plume under challenging field conditions. Area and personal samples were taken at two U.

Small tube-and-wire electrostatic precipitators ESPs were mounted on a stationary stand positioned behind the engines to sample the exhaust. Other ESPs were worn by ground crews to sample breathing zone concentrations. In addition, an aerodynamic particle sizer APS was used to determine the size distribution of the particles. Samples collected with the ESP were solvent extracted and analyzed with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.
