POF (dating website)

The dating site saw its first party night in Walkabout last weekend. Would it be plain-sailing for singletons or a plunge into murky waters. When you were young, did you ever dream about meeting the love of your life and living happily ever after?

Let me guess - Prince Charming seemed great on his Plenty of Fish account and looked even better when your eyes met across a crowded room in Walkabout, right? Online matchmaking is a multi million pound industry, which is evolving every day and it's undeniable that the whole world is hooked.

With over 1million registered users, POF is, of course, one of the best known and most lucrative dating sites. Combined with its success and that of the likes of Tinder and Match.

So the event seemed peculiar to me. It was like the online world was suddenly entering into real life, virtual reality and actuality were merging and it was happening in Walkabout on Renfield Street of all places.

Creating and maintaining relationships online through "likes" and "comments" or by "swiping right" has been criticised for killing good old face to face communication, so I thought maybe this event was an attempt to take a step back towards a more traditional way of bringing people together.

Scanning the Facebook details on the event page, I noticed the promise that this POF singles night would be the "first of many" and I couldn't help but wonder if we were on the brink of yet another change in the dating game.

Well, it's safe to say that curiosity killed the cat or in this case fish? The only way to find out what the night would really be like would be to dive right in and experience it for myself. I had absolutely no idea what to expect, and if I was feeling nervous, I couldn't imagine what those who were heading there hopeful to find love would be feeling — especially if they were used to meeting people solely online.

On arrival, I was shocked to see that the bar was mobbed, part of me had expected a room full of just POF members, awkwardly introducing themselves to each other like an introductory session at Alcoholics Anonymous. With a squad of girls out for a hen night boogying on the dance floor, a group of friends cheers-ing round a table decorated with 21st birthday balloons and punters just generally out to enjoy a tipple, it was business as usual.

To an outsider unaware of the event, it would have been impossible to tell that Walkabout was playing host to a singles night at all. All the women were there in pairs or larger groups but a good number of men seemed to be there alone, dotted around at the bar or standing at tables with a drink.

They all seemed to be partaking in the same ritual: scanning the room and occasionally looking at their phones as if searching for divine inspiration. With a lively atmosphere and tunes blasting all night, there were no apparent reasons not to enjoy yourself - the night would be what you made of it. But I still couldn't help but sense an awkward feel in the air.

The reason, in my opinion, was that there was a lack of structure to the night which acted as both a blessing and a curse. The aim of hosting a casual get together in Walkabout may have been an attempt to escape any nerves or feelings of embarrassment which can be associated to singles nights. However organising an event which brought people together who are used to meeting online seemed to create a bit of apprehensiveness and uncertainty.

Maybe there's a reason why things like the age-old speed dating always seems to work. It's structured and interactive and allows people who are on the same wavelength to meet in a way that they find comfortable. The fact that there was no indication of who was in Walkabout for the POF night and who was simply there to party did have an impact.

On a positive note, it created a natural setting in which nervous singletons could meet each other and enjoy themselves without feeling pressured or put under the spotlight. However, one of the major problems that exists when going 'out on the pull' is not knowing whether to approach someone who has caught your eye for fear that they may already be taken.

Online dating eliminates this problem as everyone who has created an account is single and looking for someone to talk to well this isn't always the case — but we will save that dodgy situation for some other article At this event however, this problem resurfaced as since it was difficult to tell who was there for the POF night. It made it hard for people to approach each other unless they had arranged to meet up online beforehand. The general feel was one of uncertainty and apprehension.

The night had the right ingredients to work — it was a safe, laid back setting which allowed people to meet and get to know each other in the flesh rather than from behind a computer screen.

But from the vibe in the bar, it seemed to turn into a night to just have a laugh and a drink with friends for many. Maybe we are still finding our feet with the dating game. Maybe Glasgow's second Plenty of Fish night would be more of a success - after all it is still new territory. As for me, the only single fish I headed home with was one freshly cooked from the train station chippy. The only fish guaranteed to not disappoint. News opinion. By Colette Crampsey.
